Botulinum toxins are controlled drugs which are classed as prescription only medicines which are illegal advertise to the public in the UK and Europe.

In the US and Canada prescription only medicines can be used in advertising so you will see many US based clinics using the POM brand names BOTOX or BOCOUTURE in advertising campaigns on television and the web.

In the UK cosmetic clinics have a difficult situation when it comes to solutions for advertising their main product which is usually botulinum toxins.

Botox is also the keyword used by most potential clients searching for wrinkle treatments or cosmetic enhancement on the internet.
Google will not allow any Adword campaigns with the word botox and may even ban ad campaigns using pay per click for having POMs in the AdWords landing page if they find repeat violations of their advertising policies.

The MRHA provide guidelines for prescription only medicine advertising and will contact companies who break these guidelines requesting removal of any breach of POM advertising in the UK.

The advertising of medicines is controlled by a combination of statutory measures (with both criminal and civil sanctions) enforced by the MHRA, and self-regulation through Codes of Practice for the pharmaceutical industry, administered by trade associations.
