How do Chemical Peels, DermaRoller and Skin Care Contribute to Facial Aesthetics?

The skin

Basal/Keratin cells are created by stem cells at the dermal epidermal junction.

The process of the basal cells moving upwards is call keratinization.

Of the basal layer, 10% of cells are stem cells, 50% are amplifying cells, and 40% are postmitotic cells. The postmitotic cells continuously move upwards through the epidermal layers until they reach the stratum cornium where the cells contain no nucleus and will exfoliate as new postmitotic cells reach the stratum cornium. With ageing this process is compromised with lesser migration of postmitotic cells resulting in a buildup of dead cells in the stratum cornium. A thick stratum cornium will make the skin greasy, dull, lifeless, and lacklustre.

Improving the skin

How does chemical peels, microdermabrasion, derma roller and skin care contribute towards skin health and skin attractiveness. The answer is normally stem cells are slowly dividing cells and with age these cells divide even slower but under certain conditions such as wound healing they divide faster. Chemical peels, mesotherapy and derma roller treatments injure the skin. Therefore these procedures contribute to increased cellular activity at the basal layer which leads to increased cellular turnover resulting in a uniform stratum cornium, thicker epidermis, and increased fibroblast activity at the basal layer. Chemical peels especially TCA peels can dramatically improve damaged skin due to lifestyle issue. The intensive exfoliation of the epidermal layers will improve the elasiticity, texture, and clearness of the skin.

Derma Roller Micro Needling

Dermaroller treatments simply injure the skin resulting in massive cellular activity which dramatically resolves numerous skin problems like scar marks, sun damaged skin, fine lines and more.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy has a dual action since the needle punctures injure the skin and at the same time the clinician is injecting nutrients and hyaluronic acid into the mesoderm. The results are amazing.

Skin Care Courses and Packages

The correct skin care package can do wonders for young and mature clients. A good skin care package designed by a specialist will always include glycolic to enhance cellular function combined with anti-oxidants for protection and nutrition for skin repair. A bespoke skin management package used daily will protect and improve the skin continuously.

Given a choice, most clients would prefer to engage in a program that preserves their natural beauty rather than wait for folds and lines to appear creating the need for high priced quick fix procedures.

When the skin is compromised, the effects of Botox or Botox and Dermal Fillers is less dramatic since the canvas of the face is flawed. Therefore skin health should be a part of the repertoire of all medical aesthetic practitioners.

Is Marketing Important For My Success in Medical Aesthetics.

Yasmin Khan author “Simple Steps to Building Successful Cosmetic Practices”

The five cosmetic marketing activities discussed so far are necessary activities if one has the desire to establish a successful and sustainable business in an industry that is competitive and is easy to enter. Also most clinic owners are weak in marketing and by not investing time and money into research, market analysis, segmentation, buyer behaviour and competition, the initial business structure is weak and vulnerable to the many competitors who are entering on a weekly basis.

Marketing for the Cosmetic Business

The intellectual resource gained from the research or five activities mentioned in previous marketing articles is necessary to complete the next five activities and they are:

Market Planning (Mission Setting Objectives Vision Planning Process)It is very difficult to determine your mission and visualize your concept if you have no idea of the market and its needs and desires. Most clinics provide a list of services which they are hoping the small elective cosmetic base will like. This is a clear sign of a weak business and I pick it this up very quickly when evaluating competitors. A competitor’s website and brochure will provide me with all the information I need to evaluate the weakness of the business.

Branding –(Brand Names-Brand Building- - Brand Promotion) Most people believe that branding is your design concept and logo. This is called the brand concept and the confusion by medical professionals of what exactly branding is has left them vulnerable to predator designers who are promising to make a business successful through design. Companies with a bad reputation will still have a bad reputation regardless of the brand image. A brand is developed over time by the leaders and the employees of the company through their commitment to deliver their vision. If the visionary is greedy, the culture will be greedy and the brand will be known for this. I experienced this with two very successful medical professionals who undelivered to their private patients believing that their brand image was enough to create loyal customers. Today, they are both bankrupt and so are a hundred other medical aesthetic business.

Pricing: Pricing strategy is overlooked by the medical arena and the lack of experience in this area of business is commoditizing the non surgical industry. Today, hair stylist are commanding a better return on investment for their time.

Promotion: Most clinicians go straight to this activity without any preparation believing that the client will act and behave like a patient on the NHS. There are only a few clients wanting to pay premium price for enhancement treatment so what you say, your branding, your consultation skills and your positioning will determine your success to draw the client in and to keep them returning.

Distribution: Distribution Channels are your locations where you provide your service. It can be one location or multiple locations. Most clinicians tend to aspire to be in a rich area or on a prestigious medical street but I think it is better to choose your locations based on convenience, parking, traffic, accessibility to tube and train station etc…..

In summary, marketing is a complex subject not limited to advertising. It is the least of the marketing executive concerns and the marketer know fully well that the accuracy of the advertising message must be accurate to pull the customer in and accuracy can only be achieved with preparation and planning before the business open its door.

Cosmetic Salon Business and Medical Aesthetics Marketing

Part 3 Medical and Aesthetic Marketing by Yasmin Khan

Continuing on from my last blog , I left off by saying that the salon environment can be a profitable business option but to be successful in medical aesthetics with this business structure still requires assistance from the clinician if the relationship is to be long term and sustainable. New entrants into the medical aesthetic market are much more aggressive leaving the salon type business exposed to new competitors who may offer the salon owner a much more profitable split or competing clinicians may provide more services and are willing to assist the salon owner with marketing type activities.

If you are in a salon type business and wanted to protect your future, you may want to discuss a legal joint venture agreement with the owner to safeguard your future and your commitment in time and effort to grow your business within the salon environment. If you are a Botox and Dermal Filler clinician you may wish to improve your skill sets and offer more services to the clients making yourself irreplaceable . In my book, I spoke of different programs such as referral programs which you can develop make the clients committed to your business. You have to make yourself irreplaceable to safeguard your business.

The various options for starting a cosmetic practice and marketing are covered in the complimentary e-learning course that is available to all attendees of the KT Training botox course. All cosmetic procedure and business courses have verifiable CPD points approved.

What is the definition of facial beauty?

The components that make this face beautiful are multifaceted and below is a list of the features of a beautiful face.

Components of Perfect Facial Aesthetics

The skin is flawless, even textured, full with proper volume, hydrated and tolerant

The cheekbones are high and symmetrical with no skin laxity

The jawline is chiselled with no jowls

Mouth to nose proportions are balanced

The distance from the cupid bow to the tip of the nose is short creating a sexy outcome.

Neck is smooth and with little sun damage

Pupils of the eyes are clear and healthy

The face above will age however the rate at which the face and body ages can be slowed down dramatically if non-surgical professionals embraced prevention rather than quick fix procedures only. The concept of prevention is an intangible concept. There are no before and after results. Prevention philosophy focuses on maintaining the health of the skin and body to sustain beauty. Therefore you are not correcting problems but providing a service that helps the client to improve and sustain their present state for as long as possible.

Skin Health

Therefore if the health of the skin is preserved in its inactive stage, the skin will remain flawless, even textured, hydrated and tolerant. Facial balance and proportions will remain intact for a longer period than those who neglect their health and skin. If non-surgical clinicians advised their clients on managing his/her skin health the client will benefit since good skin, bone density and facial muscularity will keep the face lifted and youthful.

The procedures that contribute towards skin health are chemical peels, derma roller, cosmeceutical skin care and mesotherapy and these procedures are invaluable to the sustainability of any non- surgical clinic. My next blog will discuss how these procedures differ from Dermal Fillers and Muscle Relaxants and why they are the new key procedures to add to your procedure menu if you wish to keep your customers happy for life.

Medical Market understanding Cosmetic Marketing (continued)

Developing a Cosmetic Practice

Medical Aesthetics Marketing for Medical Professionals

Following on from my last article on aesthetics marketing you want to next focus on the following marketing topics.

Buyer Behaviour (Cultural Factors -Buying Power-Social Factors-Decision Making Process) Assessing if a market will pay for medical aesthetic services is not based solely on wealth but on cultural factors and decision making processes. If the market is rich but conservative with very little women in high paying jobs, then this will impact how you position your service to the local market.

Competitive Analysis-Competitor Advantage- almost all non surgical clinics and salons are weak in marketing so a competitive analysis without the recommended market research will only tell you what the competitors are doing good or bad but not about the market itself. Therefore even if you think your services are superior to your competitors, they might not be appropriate for the consumer. Therefore you are still in a weak position for long term sustainability since a stronger competitor with the correct market intelligence can come in and knock everyone out. We were successful in achieving this results in 2005 when we entered the medical aesthetic training market. The Beauty Society who is our client also did the same to the HIgh Wycome, Thames, and London market.

Market Segmentation- this is one of my favourite subject since the lack of understanding of this subject in medicine is critical to revenue loss. In medical aesthetics the market should be segmented by age, ethnicity, and gender. The needs of each segment is not mutually exclusive but the positioning of a particular treatment has to be completely different to each segment. For instance chemical peels should be positioned to the youth segment differently than to the mature segment and to the ethnic segment. Therefore one treatment can become much more appealing to each market segment if the message to each segment was customized to solve their unique skin problem. The medical aesthetic market tend to list procedures and hope the client will determine if the treatment will benefit him or her.

Segmentation strategies can be found in my book “Simple Steps to Building Successful Cosmetic Practices”.

The Cosmetic Business and Cosmetic Marketing

Understanding Marketing in Aesthetics Medicine

Part1

Many clinic owners and medical professionals believe marketing is one activity that will magically create overnight success. With this in mind, many clinicians will invest huge amount of money in print advertising and SEO optimisation believing this is all that is required to achieve and sustain success. Many clinics have struggled due to over investing in expensive exposure activities ignoring the fundamentals of marketing. The objective of this blog is to give you a quick overview of all the areas of marketing that has to be considered to set up a business which will survive in today’s competitive medical aesthetic market.

The key areas of marketing all clinic should engage in are as follows:

Research-(Market Research-Market Trends) research activities will provide you with invaluable information as to if your local market can pay for your services which in most cases are Botox and Dermal Filler treatments. By just adding less expensive treatments with great market acceptability to your offering you can dramatically improve your revenue base. This research in combination with the other areas of marketing will provide the basis for your promotional activities.

Market Analysis (Define the market –determine market share- how to measure market share) Market research is different from market analysis. Here you want to assess how large the aesthetic market is in your local area and which competitor is the present market leader. There are no statistics for aesthetics so you will have to guess. For example, there are approximately 700,000 Botox procedures presently provided to the UK market annually. From the library, you can view the statistics for beauty consumption for all of the UK and for your local area. If your areas consumes 10% of overall beauty services then it is a safe bet to guess that approximately 70,000 Botox procedures are consumed in your local market. It is not this simple but this is start. Cultural preferences and decision making processes will impact this figure and in my next article I will continue with all the other aspects of marketing that must be taken into consideration before the business opens its door. In summary defining the market means does the market care for beauty at all or is it a very conservative rural market. The beauty statistics for your local market is also helpful in assessing the lifestyle choices of the market.

So what is the next step step, Yasmin reviews aesthetics marketing more in part 2 of the article.

Medical and aesthetics business courses for cosmetic medical professionals and aesthetics staff.

Part 2 BOTOX Statistics

In my last Botox statistics blog, I reviewed the United States Muscle Relaxant consumption trend from 2008 to 2010 since it is the only statistics available for the non surgical industry. I also mentioned that the decline in consumption in 2009 was a temporary reaction by patients who felt they could do without the treatment but quickly realized that the benefits of the treatment far outweighs the money and therefore the statistics for 2010 exceeded the 2008 figures. In America, very few practices dropped their prices since it would compromise the future of their business and the industry. However, in the United Kingdom, Botox and Dermal Fillers are being given away due to the decline in demand. How could one avoid price reduction of premium priced procedures in a reccession. The answer is simple if the practice is structured well and offer a wide range of services. For example, chemical peels and microdermabrasion are as popular as Botox treatments and much more profitable to deliver since it can be done by an esthetician with minimal clinician time. The margins are as high as 89% so one can offer a sale on these procedures and attract a high volume of new customers who will be satisfied by the treatment and will return for more. A common strategy is to educate new clients on your premium price procedures such as Muscle Relaxant treatments and sell the benefits of your expertise as a multi disciplinary clinician whose objective is to improve the patient’s overall appearance rather than an area of the face.

For example, how are top end salons capable of selling hair styling and hair colouring at prices that exceeds £200 for a cut or a colour. Daniel Galvin and John Frieda are able to achieve premium pricing by positioning themselves as stylist and not cutters. They sell the premium price of their colourist by educating the client on matching skin tones to the selected colour creating a youthful and clean look. Therefore they are selling the benefits of their expertise over an ordinary technician. Medical aesthetic clinicians need to learn from this segment of the enhancement market on how to maintain premium pricing. If non surgical clinicians continues to compete on price, the entire industry will be commoditized. Next we will discuss how to maintain premium pricing in a commodity marketing
