Creating a Cosmetic Business-Planning

Creating a Cosmetic Business

Reality business shows such as Dragon Den and the Apprentice have gained a large fan base due to the entertainment factor. However there is a stronger message being presented by both Lord Sugar and the Dragons to candidates who are asking for investment in their businesses. The message is you need to have a defined, clear business plan and strategy before any entrepreneur will invest in your business, regardless of your education and professional background. It does not matter if you have achieved success in another business since what is important is you have a thorough plan for the proposed business. A good plan will summarize the business concept and provide quantitative data to justify the business concept. The quantitative data is mandatory to show demand for the proposed service or product. The plan needs to provide detail instructions on how the business will achieve its financial objectives for year 1 and a strategic plan for the next five years since very few entrepreneurs wants to give money to a new business which might fail in year two. The candidate Neil from the apprentice performed excellent winning every task as project manager, however when asked for his business plan, he failed miserably. He had an idea but did not engage in market research to identify if the business idea was credible.

Apprentice Cosmetic Business Plan

On a good note, Leah who trained with KT Training and who is known for its business training to doctors, did have a business plan. She identified that the market was growing and she also identified that the return on investment was far greater than selling cupcakes on line. Well done Lea!!!! In a previous apprentice show there was a surgeon who did not make it through and similar to Neil, he felt he could make any business a success. Lord Sugar felt differently.

Banks, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs are looking for young entrepreneurs wanting funds to develop businesses in growth industries. Medical aesthetics is the fastest growing industry in the world and many doctors have the ability to raise funds from the private financial market however it is not your doctor credentials that will sell your business idea but your very comprehensive business plan showing you know how to manage the business for long term success.

Is Marketing Important For My Success in Medical Aesthetics.

Yasmin Khan author “Simple Steps to Building Successful Cosmetic Practices”

The five cosmetic marketing activities discussed so far are necessary activities if one has the desire to establish a successful and sustainable business in an industry that is competitive and is easy to enter. Also most clinic owners are weak in marketing and by not investing time and money into research, market analysis, segmentation, buyer behaviour and competition, the initial business structure is weak and vulnerable to the many competitors who are entering on a weekly basis.

Marketing for the Cosmetic Business

The intellectual resource gained from the research or five activities mentioned in previous marketing articles is necessary to complete the next five activities and they are:

Market Planning (Mission Setting Objectives Vision Planning Process)It is very difficult to determine your mission and visualize your concept if you have no idea of the market and its needs and desires. Most clinics provide a list of services which they are hoping the small elective cosmetic base will like. This is a clear sign of a weak business and I pick it this up very quickly when evaluating competitors. A competitor’s website and brochure will provide me with all the information I need to evaluate the weakness of the business.

Branding –(Brand Names-Brand Building- - Brand Promotion) Most people believe that branding is your design concept and logo. This is called the brand concept and the confusion by medical professionals of what exactly branding is has left them vulnerable to predator designers who are promising to make a business successful through design. Companies with a bad reputation will still have a bad reputation regardless of the brand image. A brand is developed over time by the leaders and the employees of the company through their commitment to deliver their vision. If the visionary is greedy, the culture will be greedy and the brand will be known for this. I experienced this with two very successful medical professionals who undelivered to their private patients believing that their brand image was enough to create loyal customers. Today, they are both bankrupt and so are a hundred other medical aesthetic business.

Pricing: Pricing strategy is overlooked by the medical arena and the lack of experience in this area of business is commoditizing the non surgical industry. Today, hair stylist are commanding a better return on investment for their time.

Promotion: Most clinicians go straight to this activity without any preparation believing that the client will act and behave like a patient on the NHS. There are only a few clients wanting to pay premium price for enhancement treatment so what you say, your branding, your consultation skills and your positioning will determine your success to draw the client in and to keep them returning.

Distribution: Distribution Channels are your locations where you provide your service. It can be one location or multiple locations. Most clinicians tend to aspire to be in a rich area or on a prestigious medical street but I think it is better to choose your locations based on convenience, parking, traffic, accessibility to tube and train station etc…..

In summary, marketing is a complex subject not limited to advertising. It is the least of the marketing executive concerns and the marketer know fully well that the accuracy of the advertising message must be accurate to pull the customer in and accuracy can only be achieved with preparation and planning before the business open its door.

The CPD approved Introduction to Medical Aesthetics and Starting a Cosmetic Clinic is a cosmetic business e-learning course provided free to all candidates attending the foundation botox training courses, this course will help attendees to understand the medical aesthetics business and provide a guide to starting their cosmetic practice.

In the next part of this article Yasmin reviews one of the options presently available which is providing cosmetic treatments in a beauty or health spa and the marketing benefits of this cosmetic business model for new cosmetic clinicians on completion of their cosmetic training courses.

Medical Market Understand Marketing

The Cosmetic Business and Cosmetic Marketing

Understanding Marketing in Aesthetics Medicine

Part1

Many clinic owners and medical professionals believe marketing is one activity that will magically create overnight success. With this in mind, many clinicians will invest huge amount of money in print advertising and SEO optimisation believing this is all that is required to achieve and sustain success. Many clinics have struggled due to over investing in expensive exposure activities ignoring the fundamentals of marketing. The objective of this blog is to give you a quick overview of all the areas of marketing that has to be considered to set up a business which will survive in today’s competitive medical aesthetic market.

The key areas of marketing all clinic should engage in are as follows:

Research-(Market Research-Market Trends) research activities will provide you with invaluable information as to if your local market can pay for your services which in most cases are Botox and Dermal Filler treatments. By just adding less expensive treatments with great market acceptability to your offering you can dramatically improve your revenue base. This research in combination with the other areas of marketing will provide the basis for your promotional activities.

Market Analysis (Define the market –determine market share- how to measure market share) Market research is different from market analysis. Here you want to assess how large the aesthetic market is in your local area and which competitor is the present market leader. There are no statistics for aesthetics so you will have to guess. For example, there are approximately 700,000 Botox procedures presently provided to the UK market annually. From the library, you can view the statistics for beauty consumption for all of the UK and for your local area. If your areas consumes 10% of overall beauty services then it is a safe bet to guess that approximately 70,000 Botox procedures are consumed in your local market. It is not this simple but this is start. Cultural preferences and decision making processes will impact this figure and in my next article I will continue with all the other aspects of marketing that must be taken into consideration before the business opens its door. In summary defining the market means does the market care for beauty at all or is it a very conservative rural market. The beauty statistics for your local market is also helpful in assessing the lifestyle choices of the market.

So what is the next step step, Yasmin reviews aesthetics marketing more in part 2 of the article.
