GMC Remote Prescribing Update

Remote Prescribing for BOTOX Cosmetic Treatments.

The GMC has issued guidelines to stop doctors prescribing toxins remotely. A doctor will have to review the patient face to face before providing a prescription.

Members of the KT Medical Aesthetics Forum can discuss this and other issues in the members only area.

Nurses can complete the V300 course. This course covers prescribing and the completion will enable a nurse to write the prescription for botox.

GMC to Stop Doctors Remote Prescribing with Botulinum Toxins

The BBC has reported that Doctors will no longer be able to provide prescriptions remotely for patients who require cosmetic treatments.

“The General Medical Council (GMC) says new rules will be published later this week to stop doctors remotely prescribing injectable cosmetic medicines such as Botox”.

Nurses without the V300 prescribing qualification will need to work directly with a doctor or dentist who provides prescribing in line with the current guidelines regarding prescribing botulinum toxins for cosmetic use.

Registered Nurses and Botulinum toxins for Cosmetic Use

Recommendation for Nurses Attending Dermal Fillers Courses and Botox® Training.
Nurses registered with the NMC and RCN in the UK can attend * KT Training Botox® and Dermal Filler Courses.

Note *Botox® and Registered Nurses Botulinum toxins are prescription only medicines and nurses must review their guidelines regarding the prescribing and administration of prescription only medicines. Please see guidance regarding the remote prescription of Botulinum Toxins for cosmetic use and nurses.

We recommend that nurses who wish to provide Botox® cosmetic treatments follow the guidance provided by NMC.

It is recommended that nurses acheive the independent nurse prescribing qualification which will allow the Nurse to provide a patient specific private prescription.

Registered nurses should also review MRHA Botulinum Toxin prescribing and administration information web page and the Department of Health guidelines regarding these procedures.

*Dermal Fillers are medical devices and do not require a prescription, registered Nurses can purchase Dermal Fillers direct from manufactures and selected pharmacies.
